Ive also got the water probe running, approx 30-35m in length and can also confirm that it works well.
20-30m is quite safe. For my setup to the water meter, I have run the cable in conduit - since it runs in the ground around / through the garden.

Mine is currently under the wood chips waiting for the rats to eat it.
Conduit is still to come...one day :)

Sweet, old post but as I am back at the house now, I am looking at the meter. I think that the council have a collar over it that they use to pick up the meter reading by driving a car past it. :( Not sure that I can do the reed switch method.
Mine is 55 meters and works well.
Its just a dc switching pulse, on/off no ac involved to be affected the signal other than resistance. As the current is low no problems thus far.
